Entitlement of pensioners in respite care prior to 1 October 1997

Under the pre 1 October 1997 assessment rules, a person in respite care is entitled to rent assistance for any fees they pay for the period of their respite care.

If such a person is a member of a couple, they are also entitled to receive pension at the higher single rate.

Their partner would also continue to be entitled to rent assistance in respect of any rent he or she pays in respect of the family home.
