Sensorineural hearing loss - Neurosyphilis Factor

Neurosyphilis

Neurosyphilis is an infection of the central nervous system with Treponema pallidum (syphilis).  Clinical manifestations may include headache, dizziness, neck stiffness, blurred vision, mental confusion, epileptiform attacks, hemiplegia, spastic paraplegia, behaviour changes, convulsions and emotional instability.

If there is a history of syphilis and it is not clear whether this had progressed to neurosyphilis, seek medical advice.

Preliminary questions [14416]

14744 there is some evidence that neurosyphilis may be a factor in the development or worsening of the condition under consideration.

16718 the veteran has suffered from neurosyphilis at some time.

14543  the veteran has established the causal connection between the neurosyphilis and VEA service for sensorineural hearing loss.

14550 the veteran suffered from neurosyphilis before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.

14544   the veteran has established the causal connection between the neurosyphilis and VEA service for the clinical onset of sensorineural hearing loss.

14546  the veteran has established the causal connection between the neurosyphilis and operational service for the clinical onset of sensorineural hearing loss.

or

14547  the veteran has established the causal connection between the neurosyphilis and eligible service for the clinical onset of sensorineural hearing loss.

or

7334     the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred after the end of the veteran's last period of VEA service.

7335     the condition under consideration permanently worsened.

14551 the veteran suffered from neurosyphilis before the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration.

14545   the veteran has established the causal connection between the neurosyphilis and VEA service for the clinical worsening of sensorineural hearing loss.

14548  the veteran has established the causal connection between the neurosyphilis and operational service for the clinical worsening of sensorineural hearing loss.

or

14549  the veteran has established the causal connection between the neurosyphilis and eligible service for the clinical worsening of sensorineural hearing loss.

Clinical onset and operational service [14546]

17919  the neurosyphilis is causally related to operational service.

Clinical onset and eligible service [14547]

16875  the neurosyphilis is causally related to eligible service.

Clinical worsening and operational service [14548]

17919  the neurosyphilis is causally related to operational service.

14552 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of operational service to which the neurosyphilis is causally related.

Clinical worsening and eligible service [14549]

16875  the neurosyphilis is causally related to eligible service.

14553 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of eligible service to which the neurosyphilis is causally related.
