Brief description

This is a neurological disorder which manifests with an often unpleasant or uncomfortable urge to move the legs during periods of inactivity.  It is most prominent in the evening, and is transiently relieved by movement.  There are often associated, characteristic limb movements during sleep.

Periodic limb movement disorder, is a separate disorder which is covered by separate SOPs.

This is a clinical diagnosis, with specific diagnostic criteria that need to be fulfilled.

The appropriate medical specialist is a neurologist.

Clinical onset

Time of clinical onset will be based on the history from the patient of when the relevant symptoms first manifest.

Clinical worsening

The condition tends to have a chronic course, although remissions do occur.  Worsening may be evidenced by an increase in the severity or frequency of symptoms.
