Acquired cataract - Treatment with phenothiazines Factor

Phenothiazine is the basic structure of a series of neuroleptics and anti-histaminics.

Phenothiazine derivatives include chlorpromazine, prochlorperazine, trifluoperazine, and fluphenazine.

These drugs are used to control mental disorders such as schizophrenia, paranoia, mania, psychosis resulting from mental deficiency, some forms of senility, hyperactivity in children, and even severe anxiety. The most widely used phenothiazine, (Thorazine), is prescribed for overactive schizophrenics; trifluoperazine (Stelazine) is used for inhibited and withdrawn schizophrenics.

Other phenothiazines such as Phenergan are used in anaesthesia and to control itching in conditions such as allergic reactions including hay fever, vasomotor rhinorrhoea, urticaria, angioneurotic oedema and sensitisation reactions to various drugs and other substances.

Treatment with Phenothiazines

Preliminary questions [30925]

31016 there is some evidence that treatment with phenothiazines may be a factor in the development or worsening of the condition under consideration.

31017 the condition under consideration is an anterior subcapsular cataract.

31018 the veteran has been treated with a cumulative dose of at least 750 grams of phenothiazines at some time.

31019 the cumulative dose of at least 750 grams of phenothiazines was materially contributed to by treatment of an illness or injury which is identifiable.

31020  the veteran has established the causal connection between the identified illness or injury for which the treatment with phenothiazines was given and VEA service for acquired cataract.

31021   the veteran has established the causal connection between the identified illness or injury for which the treatment with phenothiazines was given and VEA service for the clinical onset of acquired cataract.

31023  the veteran has established the causal connection between the identified illness or injury for which the treatment with phenothiazines was given and eligible service for the clinical onset of acquired cataract.

or

31024  the veteran has established the causal connection between the identified illness or injury for which the treatment with phenothiazines was given and operational service for the clinical onset of acquired cataract.

or

7334     the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred after the end of the veteran's last period of VEA service.

7335     the condition under consideration permanently worsened.

31022   the veteran has established the causal connection between the identified illness or injury for which the treatment with phenothiazines was given and VEA service for the clinical worsening of acquired cataract.

31025  the veteran has established the causal connection between the identified illness or injury for which the treatment with phenothiazines was given and eligible service for the clinical worsening of acquired cataract.

or

31026  the veteran has established the causal connection between the identified illness or injury for which the treatment with phenothiazines was given and operational service for the clinical worsening of acquired cataract.

Clinical onset and operational service [31024]

31028 the identified illness or injury made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 750 grams of phenothiazines before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.

31033  the identified illness or injury which made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 750 grams of phenothiazines is causally related to operational service.

Clinical onset and eligible service [31023]

31027 the veteran has been treated with a cumulative dose of at least 1500 grams of phenothiazines at some time.

31030 the identified illness or injury made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 1500 grams of phenothiazines.

31031 the identified illness or injury made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 1500 grams of phenothiazines before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.

31035  the identified illness or injury which made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 1500 grams of phenothiazines is causally related to eligible service.

Clinical worsening and operational service [31026]

31029 the identified illness or injury made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 750 grams of phenothiazines before the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration.

31033  the identified illness or injury which made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 750 grams of phenothiazines is causally related to operational service.

31037 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of operational service to which the identified illness or injury that materially contributed to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 750 grams of phenothiazines is causally related.

Clinical worsening and eligible service [31025]

31027 the veteran has been treated with a cumulative dose of at least 1500 grams of phenothiazines at some time.

31030 the identified illness or injury made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 1500 grams of phenothiazines.

31032 the identified illness or injury made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 1500 grams of phenothiazines before the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration.

31035  the identified illness or injury which made a material contribution to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 1500 grams of phenothiazines is causally related to eligible service.

31038 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of eligible service to which the identified illness or injury that materially contributed to the veteran's treatment with a cumulative dose of at least 1500 grams of phenothiazines is causally related.
