Hypermetropia - Corneal surgery Factor

RMA definition

The RMA has defined "corneal surgery"  to mean "radial keratotomy, laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), photorefractive keratectomy, phototherapeutic keratectomy, Epi-LASIK, laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) or penetrating keratoplasty (corneal transplantation)".

General information

Apart from keratoplasty, these treatments are for myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism.  Keratoplasty is used to treat conditions such as: keratoconus, bullous keratopathy, Fuch's dystrophy, and herpetic eye disease - scarring of the cornea caused by the herpes virus.

Corneal surgery would be documented in medical records.

PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS [26170]

26171 there is some evidence that having corneal surgery may be a factor in the development or worsening of the condition under consideration.

26172 the veteran has had corneal surgery of side and site of the body at some time.

26175 the veteran had corneal surgery of side and site of the body for a condition other than the condition under consideration.

26173  the veteran has established the causal connection between corneal surgery and VEA service for myopia or hypermetropia.

26174   the veteran has established the causal connection between corneal surgery and VEA service for the clinical onset of myopia or hypermetropia.

26178  the veteran has established the causal connection between corneal surgery and operational service for the clinical onset of myopia or hypermetropia.

or

26179  the veteran has established the causal connection between corneal surgery and eligible service for the clinical onset of myopia or hypermetropia.

or

7334     the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred after the end of the veteran's last period of VEA service.

7335     the condition under consideration permanently worsened.ý

26177   the veteran has established the causal connection between corneal surgery and VEA service for the clinical worsening ofmyopia or hypermetropia.

26180  the veteran has established the causal connection between corneal surgery and operational service for the clinical worsening of myopia or hypermetropia.

or

26181  the veteran has established the causal connection between corneal surgery and eligible service for the clinical worsening of myopia or hypermetropia.

CLINICAL ONSET AND OPERATIONAL SERVICE [26178]

26185 the veteran had corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the eighteen months before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.

39859 the veteran had corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the eighteen months before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration as a causal result of operational service.

39863 the corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the eighteen months before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, which was caused by operational service, was due to the veteran's serious default, wilful act or serious breach of discipline.

CLINICAL ONSET AND ELIGIBLE SERVICE [26179]

39857 the veteran had corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the twelve months before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.

39861 the veteran had corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the twelve months before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration as a causal result of eligible service.

39865 the corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the twelve months before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, which was caused by eligible service, was due to the veteran's serious default, wilful act or serious breach of discipline.

CLINICAL WORSENING AND OPERATIONAL SERVICE [26180]

26176 the veteran had corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the eighteen months before the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration.

39860 the veteran had corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the eighteen months before the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration as a causal result of operational service.

39965 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of operational service to which the medical condition, for which corneal surgery was performed, is causally related.

39864 the corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the eighteen months before the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration, which was caused by operational service, was due to the veteran's serious default, wilful act or serious breach of discipline.

CLINICAL WORSENING AND ELIGIBLE SERVICE [26181]

39858 the veteran had corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the twelve months before the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration.

39862 the veteran had corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the twelve months before the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration as a causal result of eligible service.

39966 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of eligible service to which the medical condition, for which corneal surgery was performed, is causally related.

39866 the corneal surgery of side and site of the body within the twelve months before the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration, which was caused by eligible service, was due to the veteran's serious default, wilful act or serious breach of discipline.
