Sleep apnoea - Autonomic neuropathy Factor

RMA definition

Autonomic neuropathy “means a disease involving the autonomic nervous system, affecting mostly the internal organs such as the bladder, the cardiovascular system, the digestive tract, and the genital organs, and which is also known as visceral neuropathy”.

General information

Autonomic neuropathy is associated with many diseases including Adie’s syndrome, chronic alcoholism, dysautonomia, and Shy-Drager syndrome.

The autonomic nervous system

Neuropathy means any functional disturbance or pathological change in a nerve, nerves or nervous system.

Establishing a history of autonomic neuropathy

If a veteran had suffered from such a disorder, this would be documented in the medical records.  However, if these records cannot be obtained, the claimant's statement about appropriate symptoms or other features will generally be accepted unless there is contradictory evidence.  Seek medical advice if it is unclear whether the claimed symptoms and treatment at that time can be attributed to autonomic neuropathy rather than to some other condition.

Autonomic Neuropathy - Sleep Apnoea
Preliminary questions [28101]

28102 there is some evidence that autonomic neuropathy may be a factor in the development or worsening of the condition under consideration.

28103 the veteran has had autonomic neuropathy at some time.

28105  the veteran has established the causal connection between the autonomic neuropathy and VEA service for sleep apnoea.

28106 the veteran had autonomic neuropathy at the time of the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.

28107   the veteran has established the causal connection between the autonomic neuropathy and VEA service for the clinical onset of sleep apnoea.

28110  the veteran has established the causal connection between the autonomic neuropathy and operational service for the clinical onset of sleep apnoea.

or

28111  the veteran has established the causal connection between the autonomic neuropathy and eligible service for the clinical onset of sleep apnoea.

or

7334     the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred after the end of the veteran's last period of VEA service.

7335     the condition under consideration permanently worsened.

28108 the veteran had autonomic neuropathy at the time of the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration.

28109   the veteran has established the causal connection between the autonomic neuropathy and VEA service for the clinical worsening of sleep apnoea.

28112  the veteran has established the causal connection between the autonomic neuropathy and operational service for the clinical worsening of sleep apnoea.

or

28113  the veteran has established the causal connection between the autonomic neuropathy and eligible service for the clinical worsening of sleep apnoea.

Clinical onset and operational service [28110]

28114  the autonomic neuropathy is causally related to operational service.

Clinical onset and eligible service [28111]

28115  the autonomic neuropathy is causally related to eligible service.

Clinical worsening and operational service [28112]

28114  the autonomic neuropathy is causally related to operational service.

28116 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of operational service to which the autonomic neuropathy is causally related.

Clinical worsening and eligible service [28113]

28115  the autonomic neuropathy is causally related to eligible service.

28117 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of eligible service to which the autonomic neuropathy is causally related.
