Osteoarthritis - Trauma to a joint Factor

Trauma means a "discrete event involving the application of physical force to or through the affected joint that causes damage to the joint" - this means a separate and distinct joint injury. These are the words used by the RMA. Therefore trauma does not include repetitive physical stress in the absence of a discrete joint injury; nor soft tissue wounds in the absence of a discrete joint injury. However, trauma may involve any type of physical injury such as a hit, blow, knock, twisting, bending or crushing injury. It also includes surgery, and penetrating injuries as may occur with projectiles such as bullets and shrapnel. Penetrating injuries must be to the joint and not just the soft tissue near the joint. If the evidence is unclear on this point, seek advice from a medical officer.
