Shin Splints - Weight bearing exercise at a rate greater than 6 METs Factor

RMA Definition

A "MET" means a unit of measurement of the level of physical exertion.  1 MET=3.5ml of oxygen/kg of body weight per minute or, 1.0 kcal/kg of body weight per hour, or resting metabolic rate.

Further information

The exercise must involve weight bearing on the leg affected by shin splints – working out on a rowing machine at the gym would not satisfy this factor.  Weight bearing exercise at a rate greater than 6 METS can be described as being of a ‘vigorous intensity’ - intense enough to represent a substantial challenge to an individual and refers to a level of effort in which a person should experience:

  • large increase in breathing or heart rate (conversation is difficult or “broken”), and
  • the effort a healthy individual might expend while jogging (8km/hr), mowing the lawn with a hand-mower, participating in high-impact aerobic dancing, carrying more than 10 kg up a flight of stairs, standing or walking with more than 30 kg.
