Shin Splints - A sudden increase in weight bearing exercise Factor

This SOP factor in shin splints requires a sudden increase in the frequency, duration, or intensity of weight bearing exercise involving the affected lower limb at the time of the clinical onset or worsening of shin splints.  The factor has not been defined further.

Defence force recruits often experience a sudden increase in the intensity of weight bearing exercise when they embark on their rookie training.  However, it is necessary to compare the individual's weight bearing activity involving the leg(s) at the time of onset or worsening of shin splints with previous weight bearing exercise.  The medical officer who diagnosed shin splints would have taken a history of the person's relevant activities leading up to the development or worsening of symptoms.

If a person had been undertaking a gradual increase in activity (eg gradually building up the duration spent training for a marathon) then this factor would not apply.  However, in such a case, the factor Weight bearing exercise at a rate greater than 6 METs  may be applicable.
