VETERANS' CHILDREN EDUCATION SCHEME (VCES) - RATES OF EDUCATION ALLOWANCE FOR 1997

The purpose of this instruction is to advise the rates of education allowance for VCES in 1997.

The increased rates are set out in Attachment A and are effective on and from the first payday in January 1997.

The education allowance for students under 16, primary students, and double orphan rates is indexed annually in line with CPI for the twelve months to June 1996.

Education allowance rates for students over 16 is increased annually and aligned with the maximum rates for AUSTUDY as determined by the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET).

The education allowance rate for students under 16 who live away from home is aligned with the rate for Assistance to Isolated Children (AIC) as determined by DEET.  In previous years this rate has always been the same as the AUSTUDY standard rate for under 18 years.  From 1997 however, as a result of an increase in the basic boarding allowance for recipients of AIC, the two rates no longer align.

The contact officer for enquiries on these rates is Marie Leach, Disability Compensation Branch, National Office on (06) 289 6046.
