Tinnitus F034
Factors in CCPS as at 10 June 2012 (F034)
- Trauma to the auditory apparatus
Date amended:
Tinnitus - Trauma to the auditory apparatus Factor
In the Statement of Principles for Tinnitus the RMA defines trauma to the auditory apparatus as "injury to the tympanic membrane, ear ossicles, cochlea or acoustic nerve caused by trauma to the head."
- Tympanic membranes are the eardrums which separate the outer ear canal from the middle ear.
- Ear ossicles are the 3 small bones in the middle ear which conduct vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. They are called the stapes, incus and malleus, also known as the stirrup, anvil and hammer.
- The cochlea is a spirally wound tube, resembling a snail shell which forms part of the inner ear.
- The acoustic nerve is the eighth cranial nerve which connects the ear to the brain.

13091 the veteran has suffered a trauma to the auditory apparatus at some time.
13094 the veteran has established the causal connection between the trauma to the auditory apparatus and VEA service for tinnitus.
13095 the veteran has established the causal connection between the trauma to the auditory apparatus and VEA service for the clinical onset of tinnitus.
30413 the veteran has established the causal connection between the trauma to the auditory apparatus and operational service for the clinical onset of tinnitus.
or
30414 the veteran has established the causal connection between the trauma to the auditory apparatus and eligible service for the clinical onset of tinnitus.
or
7334 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred after the end of the veteran's last period of VEA service.
