Tinnutis - Otosclerosis Factor

In the Statement of Principles for Tinnitus the RMA has defined otosclerosis as "a primary disorder of the labyrinthine capsule, characterised by new bone formation commonly involving the footplate of the stapes." The stapes [also called the stirrup] is one of the 3 small bones in the middle ear which conduct vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear.

The tendency to otosclerosis is familial and it becomes clinically evident in the late teenage and early adult years. About 10% of affected persons develop hearing loss.
