Alterations, modifications, aids & appliances

This chapter explains how requests for alterations, modifications, aids and appliances to promote independence and improve quality of life are managed and processed. Refer to section 10.1 in this library.

Provision of aids, appliances and alterations to assist with activities of daily living

Where clients hold a DVA Health Card, consideration must first be given to whether aids and appliances that are reasonably required can be provided through the Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAPExternal website). Refer to section 10.2 in this library.

Where the item cannot be provided through RAP, or the client does not hold a DVA Health Card, consideration may be given to whether the aid or appliance can be provided though a rehabilitation program. The requested aid or appliance must be reasonably required by the client to meet their needs or enable them to reach their rehabilitation goals. Refer to section 10.3 in this library. In some circumstances, aids and appliances may be provided to serving members where Defence remains the person’s rehabilitation authority. Refer to section 10.8 in this library.

Motor vehicle assistance

This chapter also includes the policy guidelines relating to the provision of motor vehicles and vehicle modifications.  Please note that vehicle requests, including modifications to vehicles, should utilise the relevant vehicle schemes, rather than RAP.  For further information about the provision of vehicles and vehicle modifications see:

  • Motor Vehicle Compensation Scheme under MRCA in section 10.12 in this library
  • Vehicle Assistance Scheme under the VEA in section 6.4 in the CLIK Compensation and Support Policy Library, and
