Policy

On 4 May 2026, the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (the Commission) agreed that consistent with Comcare and other compensation jurisdictions in Australia, compensation for attendant care should be paid for personal care services provided by accredited providers.

This will ensure veterans receive quality and appropriate care within recognised best practice, safety and quality guidelines.

To provide veterans with as much choice and flexibility as possible, veterans should choose from the following:

ACIA is the national peak body that endorses certification of attendant care provider organisations to the Australian Community Industry Standard (ACIS).

This policy applies to all new claims for compensation for attendant care submitted from the date of the Commission decision.

Family-member carers

On 4 May 2026, the Commission also decided that requests from veterans seeking to have a relative or partner approved to deliver attendant care services to them will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. Consistent with Comcare, these include where:

  • the veteran lives in a remote location; or
  • significant language barriers exist; or
  • there are significant cultural expectations that must be complied with.

The Commission agreed that decisions about exceptional circumstances must be informed by evidence and considered and determined by a delegate at SES Band 1 level in the Program Delivery Division.
