Scheme members must undergo a medical examination within 60 days of becoming members. For permanent employees, the employer requires an appropriate medical standard for appointment to the APS or employing authority.
The Trustees of the PSS also use the examination to decide whether the employee's health is sufficiently sound to allow him or her to serve three years in full employment without needing to take excessive sick leave.
If the employee's health is not considered sufficiently sound, he or she will be declared a Limited Benefits member.
Limited Benefits certificates will not affect PSS scheme benefits (unlike the CSS) unless, within three years of membership, the employee:
-
dies;
-
is retired on medical grounds; or
-
is redeployed on medical grounds.
The reasons for the above do not have to be related to the condition for which the employee was provided with Limited Member Benefits (LMBs).
