There may be instances where an employee is unable to make the journey to and from a medical appointment and will need assistance from another person.  This is reasonable, and costs associated with an escort's accommodation and meals will also be covered by compensation, using the same criteria as indicated above.

Ensure that, in the main, there is medical support for use of escorts.  However, common-sense rules, and where it is obvious that the employee's condition precludes him or her from travelling alone, no further evidence should be required.

Example

An employee is suffering from eye injuries and is unable to see.

His wife escorts him to Adelaide to undergo treatment.

OR

An employee is severely incapacitated and needs a nursing attendant to accompany her on a journey to and from treatment between Hobart and Melbourne.

Remember, payment of costs associated with use of an escort for company only, or any loss of income an escort may incur by taking time off work to accompany the employee, is not covered.
