Situations will arise where a decision is required on whether it is more cost effective for the employee to hire or purchase surgical aids and appliances.

There is no reason why it can't be suggested the employee purchase, say a TENS machine (a small machine that is said to block nerve pain), rather than hire it over a six month period.

While it might be cost effective to have the unit hired for a month to gauge its benefits, thereafter, it may be cheaper to purchase the unit where extended use is recommended by the treating doctor.

Maintenance and running costs should also be met by section 16, where they are reasonable costs.

Example

Purchase of hearing aids and subsequent battery replacement.
