1 Overview of Aged Care Means Testing

Last amended: 1 July 2014

Background

The information in this chapter is of a general nature to provide context to the role of DVA has in conducting the means test assessment for aged care fees. Primary responsibility for Australian Government funded aged care services is currently held by the Department of Social Services (DSS) and the Department of Human Services (DHS). Over time, and with machinery of government changes, there have been alterations to names of the relevant Departments and their specific roles, but for simplicity, references to DSS and DHS will broadly cover processes undertaken outside DVA.
