What is cross-referencing
Cross-referencing is the linking of two file numbers, usually when a marriage or [glossary:de facto:] [glossary:relationship:] links two veterans or their dependants. Cross-referencing must be done before any processing is done on either of the linked file numbers.
What cross-referencing involves
Cross-referencing is done by Client Registration Section in the relevant state office and involves:
- linking the file numbers to each other on the system (this will be evident from the Xreference File Numbers folder of the Record Maintenance tab in VIEW
- physically linking the two C files where appropriate
- writing the other file number in the X-Ref box on the front of each C file
Cross-referenced cases which are manual
To ensure rates of disability pension in the other assessment are updated before a statutory increase is applied, process the following types of cases manually:
- an income support supplement recipient whose partner is in receipt of DVA disability pension
- veteran receiving age pension from DVA whose partner is a war widow/widower
Cross-referenced cases which are automatic
The following cross-referenced cases may be processed automatically:
- income support supplement recipient whose partner is a veteran without disability pension
- war widow/widower who is also a veteran in receipt of service pension
- veteran service pensioner married to veteran service pensioner, neither being a war widow/widower
- veteran age pensioner married to veteran age pensioner, provided that they paid under a single file number

Automatic advices for cross-referenced cases
When a cross-referenced case is processed in PIPS, single advices will always be produced, overriding any selection made by the user.
