Superannuation entitlements arising from medical discharge

Where the claimant's discharge was a medical discharge, special invalidity superannuation benefits are paid under each of the main Military Superannuation Schemes:

  • Defence Forces Retirement and Death Benefits Scheme (DFRDB):
DFRDB invalidity benefits are paid where a contributing member is retired on the ground of invalidity or of physical or mental incapacity to perform his or her duties (a medical discharge).  Members are classified as Class A, Class B or Class C according to their percentage of incapacity for civilian employment.  A superannuation pension is paid to Class A and Class B invalidity retirees, while Class C retirees generally receive a lump-sum benefit.
  • Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS):
MSBS members who are retired on invalidity grounds are classified as Class A, Class B or Class C according to their percentage of incapacity for civil employment.  A superannuation pension is paid to Class A and Class B invalidity retirees, while Class C invalidity retirees are treated similarly to other retirees, with return of their own contributions in a lump-sum and the employer benefit being preserved.
