The Tax File Number (TFN) is obtained from the ED from.  After entering on PRACSYS it will then appear on the payees group certificate at the end of the financial year.  The number will not appear on the screen after initial entry.

There are strict privacy guidelines surrounding the TFN.

Under the Privacy Act:

  • Employers must instruct their staff about people's rights to privacy and must ensure that people's privacy is protected;

  • Employers must ensure the security of file number information and must take measures to strictly control access to the information.

  • Employers should be aware of the penalties of misuse of tax file number information and must ensure that their staff are also aware of the penalties.

  • Tax file number information about previous employees, when no longer required for taxation purposes, must be destroyed in accordance with guidelines to be issued by the Privacy Commissioner.

  • The Privacy Commissioner may investigate the use of tax file number information and has the right of access to premises during an investigation.

All ED forms must be stored in a secure place, not simply placed on files.
