Generally a self-contained living area is as area with private or separate sleeping, cooking and bathroom facilities.

For example, a flat or converted garage that has its own kitchen and bathroom would be regarded as a self-contained living area whereas a bedroom rented to a boarder who has access to the home's facilities would not.
