SOP BULLETIN

#4

24 November, 1997

THE FOLLOWING RMA SOPS ARE TO BE GAZETTED ON 26 NOVEMBER 1997

New SOPs

None

Replacement SOPs

Gout

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Amendments

Intervertebral disc Prolapse

Malignant Neoplasm of the Bladder

Internal Derangement of the Knee

IMPORTANT OPERATIONAL FEATURES

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Revocation (90, 91 of '97 - replacing 286, 287 of '95)

There has been a significant change to the existing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome SOPs.

The RMA have accepted a causal association between the development of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and infection with either Epstein-Barr virus or Ross River virus, provided that infection is present at the time of clinical onset of CFS.

Gout

Revocation (88, 89 of '97, replacing 7, 8 & 202, 203 of '95)

Changes:

  • The definition of Gout has been extended by adding some examples of clinical manifestations.
  • The ICD code 274.11 has now been deleted from these SOPs.  That code, which applies to uric acid nephrolithiasis, is covered by the SOPs for Nephrolithiasis (178 & 179 of '94).  The non-specific code 984 has also been deleted from the Gout SOPs.
  • The list of specified drugs has been amended by deleting aspirin and nicotinic acid and by adding cyclosporine A and frusemide.  Minimum dose levels and durations of treatment have been added for each drug.
  • The factors “ being obese “ and “ undergoing chemotherapy “ have been added to both SOPs

Intervertebral Disc Prolapse

Amendment (92, 93 of '97, amending 130, 131 of '96)

The definition  “ trauma to the relevant disc ”  has been altered to include the necessity for there to be pain and altered range of movement at the time of the injury and by giving additional examples of incidents which may lead to such trauma.  In addition, there is no longer the requirement for a  “ fall “  to be  ' from a height '.

There is also a new definition for Intervertebral Disc Prolapse which only corrects a minor spelling error.   (Are you able to pick it ?)

MINOR AMENDMENTS

Malignant Neoplasm of the Bladder

Amendment (94, 95 of '97, amending 130, 131 of '96)

The new definition for 'aromatic amines' also only corrects minor spelling/punctuation errors.

(There should be a prize for people who can pick these changes !)

Internal Derangement of the Knee

Amendment (96 of '97, amending 59 of '97)

The  ' internal derangement of the day '  has finally been corrected!
