“The amount of compensation is such amount, not exceeding $3,500, as Comcare considers reasonable, having regard to:
(a)the charges ordinarily made for funerals in the place where the funeral was carried out; and
Regard needs to be had to local costs for funerals, although the amount of the funeral will probably exceed the statutory maximum rate payable under this subsection anyway.
Look at reasonable costs. That means Comcare will not provide payment for 'extras' that family members may request, like special handles on coffins, coffins made from particular timbers, headstones and so on.
(b)any amount paid or payable in respect of the cost of the funeral under any other law of the Commonwealth

In some cases, another Commonwealth authority might pick up the tab, where for example, the employee was also a war veteran. Costs in that circumstance may then be covered by the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
