SOP Bulletin 200 [3]
This SOP covers meningiomas that are benign or intermediate grade and arise in the lining of the brain. It does not cover malignant meningiomas (rare) or meningiomas of the lining of the spinal cord (also rare).
The diagnosis may be suspected based on imaging findings (CT or MRI of the brain), but definitive diagnosis requires histology.
The relevant medical specialist is a neurosurgeon.
* another SOP applies
# non-SOP condition
The condition tends to be asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic and be found incidentally on imaging (or at autopsy). Clinical features may include seizures and focal defects related to the tumour location.
The natural course of a meningioma varies with size and grade. Grade 1 tumours may simply require observation. Treatment for grade two tumours is surgery with or without radiotherapy. Grade two tumours have a high recurrence rate. Evidence of clinical worsening beyond the normal course of the disease is required for a clinical worsening factor to apply.
WHO Grade 1 (covered by SOP)
WHO Grade 2 (covered by SOP)

Cerebral meningioma - Inability to obtain appropriate clinical management for cerebral meningioma Factor
Last reviewed for CCPS 19 February 1996.
Investigative Documents
Medical Report - Inability to Obtain Appropriate Clinical Management - [GQACM] Preliminary questions [14009]
14017 [6] the clinical onset of cerebral meningioma occurred after the end of the veteran's last period of VEA service. the veteran's cerebral meningioma permanently worsened. the veteran was unable to obtain appropriate clinical management for cerebral meningioma at some time.
14020 [9] the inability to obtain appropriate clinical management for cerebral meningioma contributed to the clinical worsening of the veteran's cerebral meningioma. 14022 — the veteran has established the causal connection between the inability to obtain appropriate clinical management for cerebral meningioma and VEA service for the clinical worsening of cerebral meningioma. 14023 — the veteran has established the causal connection between the inability to obtain appropriate clinical management for cerebral meningioma and operational service for the clinical worsening of cerebral meningioma. or 14024 — the veteran has established the causal connection between the inability to obtain appropriate clinical management for cerebral meningioma and eligible service for the clinical worsening of cerebral meningioma. Clinical worsening and operational service [14023] or 14031 — the identified illness or injury that prevented the veteran from obtaining appropriate clinical management for cerebral meningioma is causally related to operational service. [14] [15] Clinical worsening and eligible service [14024] or 14032 — the identified illness or injury that prevented the veteran from obtaining appropriate clinical management for cerebral meningioma is causally related to eligible service. Cerebral meningioma - Therapeutic radiation to the head or neck Factor
Last reviewed for CCPS 19 February 1996.
Preliminary questions [14008]
11429 [22] the veteran has undergone a course of therapeutic radiation to the head or neck at some time.
11431 [23] the veteran underwent a course of therapeutic radiation to the head or neck for treatment of an illness or injury which is identifiable. the course of therapeutic radiation to the head or neck was given for treatment of the identified illness or injury before the clinical onset of cerebral meningioma. [25]
14011 — the veteran has established the causal connection between the course of therapeutic radiation to the head or neck and VEA service for the clinical onset of cerebral meningioma.
14014 — the veteran has established the causal connection between the course of therapeutic radiation to the head or neck and operational service for the clinical onset of cerebral meningioma.
or
14015 — the veteran has established the causal connection between the course of therapeutic radiation to the head or neck and eligible service for the clinical onset of cerebral meningioma.
Clinical onset and operational service [14014]
11438 — the identified illness or injury for which the course of therapeutic radiation to the head or neck was undergone is causally related to operational service. [26] [27]
Clinical onset and eligible service [14015]
11439 — the identified illness or injury for which the course of therapeutic radiation to the head or neck was undergone is causally related to eligible service. [28] [27]
