SOP Bulletin 212 [3]
Kaposi sarcoma is a vascular neoplasm that usually presents with purplish, reddish blue, or dark brown/black skin lesions (macules, nodules, plaques). Lesions can also occur on mucous membranes and viscera.
Diagnosis may be suspected based on the characteristic appearance of the skin lesion/s, but requires confirmation by histology (from biopsy or excision).
The relevant medical practitioner is an oncologist or infectious diseases physician.
Clinical onset will be when the lesions on the skin (or elsewhere), subsequently confirmed to be Kaposi sarcoma, were first noticed.
Clinical worsening
The only worsening factor is for inability to obtain appropriate clinical management. A wide range of treatment options are available and appropriate treatment will depend on the individual circumstances and aetiology.
