Brief description
Zika virus is an arthropod-borne virus transmitted by mosquitoes. Clinical manifestations occur in approximately 20 percent of infections. The incubation period between mosquito bite and onset of clinical manifestations is typically 2 to 14 days. The illness is usually mild and symptoms resolve within two to seven days. Symptoms include acute onset of low-grade fever with maculopapular itchy rash, joint pain (mostly in the small joints of the hands and feet), and conjunctivitis. Outbreaks of Zika virus infection have occurred in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, the Americas and the Caribbean.
