Clinical onset
The condition typically has an insidious onset, with pain developing during the course of prolonged activity, such as running or cycling. Once the diagnosis has been made, onset can be backdated to the commencement of the characteristic pain.
Clinical worsening
Worsening may be evidenced by an increase in the frequency, severity or duration of symptoms. However, permanent worsening is unlikely, as the condition generally responds well to treatment and a return to full activity is typically acheivable within 6 months with appropriate treatment.
