Straining at stool due to constipation or diarrhoea

Haemorroids - Straining at stool due to constipation or diarrhoea Factor

Frequency of bowel movements varies with individuals and going without a bowel movement for 2 or 3 days does not necessarily indicate constipation is present.  With constipation the stools are often unduly hard.  Straining occurs through the excessive expulsive effort in the process of attempting defaecation that is infrequent and incomplete.

Causes of constipation

Diarrhoea means the passage of frequent loose or watery stools.  Diarrhoea may resolve spontaneously if due to an acute infection; chronic diarrhoea requires assessment and treatment of symptoms and the underlying disorder.  Straining occurs with diarrhoea through an increasing or inordinate desire to attempt the act of defaecation often when there is virtually no solid material to expel.
