Inhaling or absorbing a chemical agent contaminated by TCDD
Malignant neoplasm of the prostate - Inhaling or absorbing a chemical agent contaminated by TCDD Factor
The chemical name for TCDD is 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-para-dioxin. It is commonly referred to as dioxin.
The RMA defines “inhaling or absorbing a chemical agent” as:
- decanting or spraying,
- cleaning and maintenance of equipment used to apply,
- being sprayed with,
- handling or sawing of timber treated with, or
- being in an environment shrouded in dust from timber treated with, one of the following chemicals
- 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid,
- 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxypropionic acid,
- 2,4,5-trichlorophenol,
- 2-(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)-ethyl 2,2-dichloropropionate,
- o,o-dimethyl-o-(2,4,5-trichlorophenyl)-phosphorothioate,
- pentachlorophenol,
- 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol,
- 2,4,6-trichlorophenol,
- 1,3,4-trichloro-2-(4-nitrophenoxy)benzene,
- 2,4-dichloro-1-(4-nitrophenoxy)benzene, or
- 2,4-dichloro-1-(3-methoxy-4-nitrophenoxy)-benzene.
These agents include Agent Orange, and a range of other herbicides as well as a few chlorophenols. Fungicides containing chlorophenols are used in the treatment of timber.

Preliminary questions [28422]
34384 there is some evidence that inhaling or absorbing chemical agents contaminated by TCDD may be a factor in the development of the condition under consideration.
28425 the veteran has established the causal connection between the inhalation or absorption of chemical agents contaminated by TCDD and operational service for the clinical onset of malignant neoplasm of the prostate.
Clinical onset and operational service [28425]
34386 the veteran has inhaled or absorbed a chemical agent contaminated by TCDD for a cumulative period of at least 30 days at some time.
34387 the veteran has inhaled or absorbed a chemical agent contaminated by TCDD for a cumulative period of at least 30 days at least five years before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.
34388 operational service made a material contribution to the veteran's inhalation or absorption of a chemical agent contaminated by TCDD for a cumulative period of at least 30 days at least five years before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.
