Aphakia

Hypermetropia - Aphakia Factor

General information

Aphakia is the absence of the lens from the eye due to surgical removal (eg due to cataract formation), a perforating wound, ulcer or a congenital defect.

An aphakic eye is strongly hypermetropic and if it were a congenital defect, the resultant visual problems eventually would have been investigated and the problem diagnosed.  Any injury severe enough to cause loss of the lens would have required medical attention.  Therefore absence of the lens normally would be recorded in doctors' records and/or hospital notes.  Seek medical advice if aphakia is claimed to have been present but confirmation is not available.

PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS [26232]

15583 there is some evidence that aphakia may be a factor in the development or worsening of the condition under consideration.

26395 the veteran has had aphakia at some time.

24697 the veteran has had aphakia of side and site of the body at some time.

15431  the veteran has established the causal connection between aphakia and VEA service for hypermetropia.

15438 the veteran had aphakia of side and site of the body at the time of the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.

15432   the veteran has established the causal connection between the aphakia and VEA service for the clinical onset of hypermetropia.

15434  the veteran has established the causal connection between the aphakia and operational service for the clinical onset of the hypermetropia.

or

15435  the veteran has established the causal connection between the aphakia and eligible service for the clinical onset of the hypermetropia.

or

7334     the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred after the end of the veteran's last period of VEA service.

7335     the condition under consideration permanently worsened.

15447 the veteran had aphakia of side and site of the body at the time of the clinical worsening of the condition under consideration.

15433   the veteran has established the causal connection between the aphakia and VEA service for the clinical worsening of the hypermetropia.

15436  the veteran has established the causal connection between the aphakia and operational service for the clinical worsening of the hypermetropia.

or

15437  the veteran has established the causal connection between the aphakia and eligible service for the clinical worsening of hypermetropia.

CLINICAL ONSET AND OPERATIONAL SERVICE [15434]

15445  the aphakia of side and site of the body is causally related to operational service.

CLINICAL ONSET AND ELIGIBLE SERVICE [15435]

15446  the aphakia of side and site of the body is causally related to eligible service.

CLINICAL WORSENING AND OPERATIONAL SERVICE [15436]

15445  the aphakia of side and site of the body is causally related to operational service.

15453 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of operational service to which the aphakia of side and site of the body is causally related.

CLINICAL WORSENING AND ELIGIBLE SERVICE [15437]

15446  the aphakia of side and site of the body is causally related to eligible service.

15454 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of eligible service to which the aphakia of side and site of the body is causally related.
