Increased intra-abdominal pressure due to coughing or sneezing

Inguinal hernia - Increased intra-abdominal pressure due to coughing or sneezing Factor

Coughing and sneezing are part of ordinary everyday life; for SoP purposes coughing or sneezing must be forceful enough to cause increased intra-abdominal pressure.  Such coughing or sneezing may develop in response to environmental factors or may be due to a medical condition.

Environmental factors which can cause coughing or sneezing include working in a dusty, smoky, or confined atmosphere, working amongst chemicals, solvents, paints, asbestos, or other products which can irritate the airways.  A ship’s stoker, for example, would be exposed to coal dust which might precipitate the development of chronic cough.  Reactions to such environmental factors vary between individuals and may constitute an allergic response.  There can be incidental exposure to irritants such as smoke and other fumes in the atmosphere.

In many cases cough from exposure to irritants would develop into another medical condition such as asbestosis, silicosis, or pneumoconiosis.  Examples of medical conditions that can cause a cough include chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis or pulmonary fibrosis.  Sneezing may be due to conditions such as sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and vasomotor rhinitis.
