Increased intra-abdominal pressure due to a direct blow to the abdomen
Inguinal hernia - Increased intra-abdominal pressure due to a direct blow to the abdomen Factor
The RMA definition is “acute or chronic (intermittent or continuous) elevation of pressure within the abdominal cavity due to …… physical trauma to the abdomen involving a direct blow to the abdomen”. This would usually mean a direct hit to the abdomen or the abdomen hitting something such as in a fall. It could also mean a sudden forceful push to the abdomen.
Blunt abdominal trauma is most commonly the result of vehicular trauma, assault, recreational accidents or falls. This type of trauma can have serious consequences such as damage to other organs in the abdomen and rupture of the abdominal aorta. Another cause is ‘iatrogenic trauma’; that is, trauma caused by treatment including cardiorespiratory resuscitation measures and the Heimlich manoeuvre (sudden upward pressure on the diaphragm to expel an obstruction in the throat).
The abdominal trauma may not have warranted medical treatment if the symptoms were mild at the time. In more serious cases the presence of an inguinal hernia as a result of the direct blow to the abdomen may not be readily apparent until some weeks or months afterwards.
