Undertaking weight bearing exercise on the foot

Plantar fasciitis - Undertaking weight bearing exercise on the foot Factor

The RMA does not define 'weight bearing exercise', but the factor requires such exercise to be at a rate of at least 5 METs, and involve repeated lifting of the affected foot, for a continuous period of at least one hour, at least once per week, over a period of at least the three months (RH) or six months (BOP) before the clinical onset or worsening of plantar fasciitis.

A MET is defined by the RMA to mean 'a unit of measurement of the level of physical exertion.  1 MET=3.5ml of oxygen/kg of body weight per minute or, 1.0 kcal/kg of body weight per hour, or resting metabolic rate'.  At least 5 METs in this context would include brisk walking, running, marching and any exercise or sport where the foot is repeatedly raised.
