Exfoliation syndrome

Open-angle glaucoma - Exfoliation syndrome Factor

The RMA states that exfoliation syndrome "means a syndrome associated with the presence of extensive exfoliation material in the anterior chamber of the eye."

Exfoliation syndrome [XFS] is currently identified as the most common identifiable specific entity leading to the development of glaucoma. However, it is still an uncommon condition. The Australian Blue Mountains Eye Study found the prevalence of XFS to be 12% in those with open angle glaucoma.

Deposits of unknown origin and composition are seen on the lens surface, posterior iris surface, ciliary processes, zonule, loose in the anterior chamber, and in the trabecular meshwork. The disorder is also known as pseudo-exfoliation syndrome and is more common with increasing age.
