Bleeding from a cerebral aneurysm or cerebral vascular malformation

Intracerebral haemorrhage - Bleeding from a cerebral aneurysm or cerebral vascular malformation Factor

Cerebral aneurysm

A cerebral aneurysm is a localised abnormal dilatation of a cerebral blood vessel. Aneurysms can be congenital or arise from a number of causes such as fungal or bacterial infections.

Rupture and bleeding of a cerebral aneurysm would require immediate medical attention.

Cerebral vascular malformation

A cerebral vascular malformation may also be referred to as an arteriovenous malformation [AVM].  It is a congenital disorder.  A malformation is characteristically a complex tangle of abnormal arteries and veins that are connected by one or more abnormal pathways [fistulas].  The fistulas permit high-speed, high-flow shunting of blood from the arterial to the venous side of the circulation without the usual resistance of an intervening capillary bed.  This shunting causes low blood pressure in the arterial vessels feeding the malformation and neighbouring areas of the brain that they normally supply with blood.

Cerebral vascular malformations typically cause problems before the age of 40.  The most common symptoms include bleeding, seizures and neurological problems such as paralysis or loss of speech, memory or vision.

Rupture of a cerebral vascular malformation is a rare cause of strokes [about 2%].

If the veteran had symptoms due to a cerebral vascular malformation or AVM medical attention would have been sought.

Preliminary questions [28380]

28381 there is some evidence that bleeding from a cerebral aneurysm or a cerebral vascular malformation may be a factor in the development of the condition under consideration.

28382  the veteran has bled from a cerebral aneurysm or a cerebral vascular malformation at some time.

28387 the veteran has bled from a cerebral aneurysm at some time.

or

28388 the veteran has bled from a cerebral vascular malformation at some time.

28383 the identified illness or injury occurred at the time of the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident.

28384  the veteran has established the causal connection between the cerebral aneurysm or cerebral vascular malformation and VEA service for the clinical onset of cerebrovascular accident.

28385   the veteran has established the causal connection between the cerebral aneurysm or cerebral vascular malformation and operational service for the clinical onset of cerebrovascular accident.

or

28386   the veteran has established the causal connection between the cerebral aneurysm or cerebral vascular malformation and eligible service for the clinical onset of cerebrovascular accident.

Clinical onset and operational service [28385]

22451  the identified illness or injury is causally related to operational service.

Clinical onset and eligible service [28386]

22452  the identified illness or injury is causally related to eligible service.
