Thrombosis of a deep vein draining a lower limb

Varicose Veins of the Lower Limb - Thrombosis of a deep vein draining the lower limb Factor

Thrombosis is the formation of a thrombus (blood clot) in a deep vein.  It is possible for the disease to be clinically silent until complications occur.  Signs and symptoms of thrombosis of a deep vein (DVT) include unilateral swelling, warmth and redness of the affected limb.  Superficial veins may become more prominent and varicosities occur, or the limb may appear a bluish colour (cyanotic) due to stagnated venous blood.  The presence of deep vein thrombosis may be detected or confirmed by radiography, either by ultrasound examination or X-ray following injection of radio-opaque dye into the vein.

Deep veins which drain the lower limbs

The RMA defines a “deep vein draining the affected lower limb” as “a vein contained within the deep fascia of the limb or pelvis (such as the veins of the calf pump, popliteal veins, femoral veins and iliac veins), which drains the affected limb”.  Deep veins are those located within the muscular system, but not all deep veins drain the lower limbs.
