A head injury
Intracerebral haemorrhage - A head injury Factor
This is defined by the RMA as a blunt or penetrating wound of the head which results directly from the impact of a blow to the head, or indirectly from acceleration or deceleration forces applied to the head, and which causes:
- cerebral laceration, contusion, or other intracranial injury; or
- closed or open fracture of the skull; or
- concussion, loss of consciousness, or post-traumatic amnesia.
This could include a direct blow to the head, or the application of force such as the G forces experienced by jet pilots.
The head is that area above the neck. Seek medical advice if it is not clear whether or not the claimed injury meets the RMA definition of "head injury" for cerebrovascular accident.
If a veteran or member had a head injury as defined above he or she would have needed significant medical attention at that time. Such medical treatment would normally be recorded in doctors' notes and/or hospital records. However, these records may have been destroyed or can no longer be obtained. Therefore, if there is a reliable history of injury and/or appropriate medical treatment at a particular time, this generally will be accepted, unless there is contradictory evidence. Seek medical advice if it is unclear whether the claimed symptoms and treatment at that time are consistent with a head injury as defined by the RMA.

Preliminary questions [22429]
22635 there is some evidence that a head injury may be a factor in the development of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident.
22430 the veteran has had a head injury at some time.
22431 the veteran had a head injury within the 28 days before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident.
22433 the veteran has established the causal connection between the head injury and VEA service for the clinical onset of cerebrovascular accident.
22434 the veteran has established the causal connection between the head injury and operational service for the clinical onset of cerebrovascular accident.
or
22435 the veteran has established the causal connection between the head injury and eligible service for the clinical onset of cerebrovascular accident.
Clinical onset and operational service [22434]
37227 on operational service, the veteran had a head injury within the 28 days before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident.
37230 the head injury on operational service within the 28 days before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident, was due to the veteran's serious default, wilful act or serious breach of discipline.
or
37232 the head injury within the 28 days before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident, was due to an illness or injury which is identifiable.
37233 the identified illness or injury which caused the head injury is causally related to operational service.
Clinical onset and eligible service [22435]
37228 on eligible service, the veteran had a head injury within the 28 days before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident.
37229 as a causal result of eligible service, the veteran had a head injury within the 28 days before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident.
37231 the head injury on eligible service within the 28 days before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident, was due to the veteran's serious default, wilful act or serious breach of discipline.
or
37232 the head injury within the 28 days before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration, a cerebrovascular accident, was due to an illness or injury which is identifiable.
37234 the identified illness or injury which caused the head injury is causally related to eligible service.
