Surgery to the middle ear or inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region

Sensorineural hearing loss - Surgery to the middle ear or inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region Factor

Such surgery would include operations involving the eardrum.  Conditions which may be treated by surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region include otosclerosis, mastoid disease, Meniere's disease and tumours.  Reference may be made to:

  • myringotomy - the cutting of a hole in the ear drum
  • myringoplasty - the surgical restoration of a perforated eardrum
  • mastoidectomy - excision of the mastoid cells or the mastoid process of the temporal bone
  • tympanoplasty - surgical restoration of the eardrum
  • labyrinthectomy - excision of the labyrinth of the ear
  • ossiculoplasty - repair of any of the 3 small bones in the middle ear called the stapes, incus and malleus, also known as the stirrup, anvil and hammer
  • fenestration - the surgical creation of a new opening in the labyrinth of the ear for restoration of hearing in cases of otosclerosis
  • middle ear prostheses

If a veteran or member had surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region, this medical treatment would normally be recorded in doctors' notes and/or hospital records.

Preliminary questions [14423]

14751 there is some evidence that surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body may be a factor in the development or worsening of the condition under consideration.

14676 the veteran has undergone surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region at some time.

14677 the veteran has undergone surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body at some time.

14678 the veteran underwent surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body for treatment of an illness or injury which is identifiable.

14679  the veteran has established the causal connection between the surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region and VEA service for sensorineural hearing loss.

14686 for treatment of the identified illness or injury, the veteran underwent surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body before the clinical onset of the condition under consideration.

14680   the veteran has established the causal connection between the surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region and VEA service for the clinical onset of sensorineural hearing loss.

14682  the veteran has established the causal connection between the surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region and operational service for the clinical onset of sensorineural hearing loss.

or

14683  the veteran has established the causal connection between the surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region and eligible service for the clinical onset of sensorineural hearing loss.

or

7334     the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred after the end of the veteran's last period of VEA service.

7335     the condition under consideration permanently worsened.

14687 for treatment of the identified illness or injury, the veteran underwent surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body before the clinical worsening of the condition

14681   the veteran has established the causal connection between the surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region and VEA service for the clinical worsening of sensorineural hearing loss.

14684  the veteran has established the causal connection between the surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region and operational service for the clinical worsening of sensorineural hearing loss.

or

14685  the veteran has established the causal connection between the surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region and eligible service for the clinical worsening of sensorineural hearing loss.

Clinical onset and operational service [14682]

14688  the identified illness or injury for which surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body was undergone is causally related to operational service.

Clinical onset and eligible service [14683]

14689  the identified illness or injury for which surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body was undergone is causally related to eligible service.

Clinical worsening and operational service [14684]

14688  the identified illness or injury for which surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body was undergone is causally related to operational service.

14690 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of operational service to which the identified illness or injury for which surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body was undergone is causally related.

Clinical worsening and eligible service [14685]

14689  the identified illness or injury for which surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body was undergone is causally related to eligible service.

14691 the clinical onset of the condition under consideration occurred prior to that part of eligible service to which the identified illness or injury for which surgery to the middle ear, inner ear or posterior cranial fossa region on other relevant side and site of the body was undergone is causally related.
