Wearing inappropriate footwear

Plantar fasciitis - Wearing inappropriate footwear Factor

The RMA defines inappropriate footwear to mean 'footwear that results in excess pronation'.  Excess pronation in the foot relates to the turning of the sole outwards with the lateral (outside) margin of the foot elevated.  Excess pronation is likely to occur when the shoes worn provide inadequate support to feet, including heels and arches, for the activities undertaken.  This scenario may occur if wearing faulty or worn out shoes;  or where service personnel, such as members of the SAS are required to run for extended periods in service boots.  Since late 2000, service boots have been custom-fitted;  and since at least 1990, commercial footwear (sports shoes) have been worn by the military when engaged in formal physical exercise and training.
