A complete or partial obstruction of a vein draining a lower limb
Varicose Veins of the Lower Limb - Complete or partial obstruction of a vein draining the lower limb Factor
A complete or partial obstruction can hamper the venous return and contribute to varicose veins of the lower limb. The most likely site for an obstruction is the inferior vena cava, or its major tributaries draining the affected lower limb.
The RMA does not define the term “complete or partial obstruction of a vein”. Obstruction may result from external compression of a vein draining the affected lower limb by abdominal tumours, glands, or fibrous bands, or ligature; obstruction from within the lumen usually occurs from thrombosis.
Note: Medical-scientific evidence does not support exercise, standing, straining, constipation, garters, tight clothing, or being confined in cramped conditions as causing obstruction of a vein.
Evidence of lower limb venous obstruction would be swelling of one or both legs and the development of varicose veins. However, swelling of the legs can also result from general circulatory failure. If the evidence is unclear seek medical advice.
