The effects of deafness will depend on:

• the severity of the loss;

• the rate of the loss;

• whether one or both ears are affected; and

• the age of onset of deafness.

Hearing loss is classified into three forms of deafness:

• conductive;

• sensory-neural; and

• mixed conductive and sensory-neural.
