Possible Vs Probable

It would be easy if doctors were all able to provide an opinion that the condition under claim probably relates to the employee's employment.

However, this is not always the case.  The condition may be a complex one, with many known factors contributing to its onset.  Doctors simply cannot always provide a cut and dried explanation of why a condition has occurred.

To assist doctors with the probable/possible angle, try channelling questions along the following lines:

  • “is it reasonable to assume”; or

  • “is it more likely than not”;

rather than

  • “on the balance of probability as distinct from possibility”.

Some doctors may have no idea what the latter phrase means.  Remember, while Comcare staff are provided with training about what probability versus possibility is all about, doctors aren't.
