1.2.2 Approval of care recipients

Eligibility for Australian Government aged care services is first determined by an ACAT/ACAS.

As of 1 July 2014, the distinction between low level and high level care will be removed. Low care and high care aged care approvals valid on 1 July 2014 will become permanent residential aged care approvals without any restriction to a particular level of care.

Any person with a permanent residential aged care approval may be admitted to any residential aged care place, subject to availability and the provider’s agreement. A person’s access to residential aged care places is determined on the basis of their need for care, not their income or assets.
