RESEARCH AT THE AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL

PURPOSE

The purpose of this Instruction is to formalise previously advised procedures for obtaining research material from the Australian War Memorial (AWM).

BACKGROUND

2.The AWM used to conduct research on behalf of other agencies but has not been able to do so for over 2 years.  As a short term measure the Compensation and Review Branch provided resources to carry out research on behalf of Compensation areas in State Offices, but for nearly 2 years has not had the resources to undertake this task.

PROCEDURE

3.State Offices requiring research material from the Australian War Memorial should contact a research agent familiar with the available sources.  The research agent will provide a general report on the inquiry and answer specific questions.  A list of research agents is attached.

4.If a research agent finds that access to the material required is denied because it is in a closed file the research agent should contact the State Office.  The State Office should then inform the Compensation Policy and Research Section of the Compensation and Review Branch in National Office.  This Section will liaise with the AWM and arrange access if possible.

5.The attached list of research agents replaces any previous lists distributed by National Office.  The costs are reasonable for the information obtained.

Research agents familiar with Australian War Memorial sources

The following people are interested in researching sources on behalf of enquirers unable to visit the Memorial's Research Centre personally.  The Memorial accepts no responsibility for work performed by the research agents.  Arrangements made are strictly between the enquirers and agents.  Agent's fees are approximately $20 - $45 per hour and a stamped self addressed envelope should be forwarded with your initial letter.
