Social Security Age Pension Claims

Who may claim age pension from DVA

Only Australian veterans in receipt of a Disability Pension or their partners, should complete Centrelink Form Claim for Aged Pension when applying for Social Security age pension to be paid by DVA.

Partner not claiming pension

Take the three actions below when the partner of the veteran chooses not to claim pension.

Step

Action

1

If the partner is eligible for pension, advise the veteran and the partner that unless they partner wishes to defer their claim under the pension bonus scheme, it may be to their advantage for the partner to apply, as the partnered income and asset tests apply in any case

2

Ensure that the partner's personal and income and asset details have been supplied on the claim forms

3

Ensure that both veteran and partner sign and date the form where physically possible

Partner to complete separate form

Where members of a couple are applying for age pension, both members of the couple must complete separate forms.

Supplementary forms

Depending on the individual circumstances of the claimant's income and asset details, other relevant supplementary forms may need to be completed. Where any additional information is required (eg farm, property, care accommodation, compensation etc), DVA supplementary forms (D0510-D0550) can be used.

Proof of Identity

All claimants must provide satisfactory proof of identity documentation.

Centrelink transfers and Work Bonus Bank

Claimants for service pension, age pension and ISS who are Social Security pension age and were previously paid at Centrelink may have accrued a Work Bonus Bank balance at Centrelink. These claimants are entitled to transfer this Work Bonus Bank balance to Veterans' Affairs when granted an income support pension.

Procedure Library – Work Bonus Bank: 10.1.4/Work Bonus Bank

Whenever granting an income support payment to a claimant who was previously paid at Centrelink and is over Social Security pension age, it is necessary to obtain the claimant's Centrelink Work Bonus Bank balance immediately prior to the date of grant at DVA. The following forms can be used to request the Work Bonus Bank balance from Centrelink:

  • D664A – Centrelink Age Pension Transfer Details,
  • D2663A – Transfer Details – War Widows and Widowers transferring from a Centrelink payment,
  • D664B – Centrelink Pension details.

Balances for partners of claimants who will remain paid at Centrelink should also be obtained and recorded.

Where the claimant has a Work Bonus Bank balance at Centrelink, this must be manually recorded in the Work Bonus Bank screen in PIPS in the 'Balance Adjustment' field from the date of grant.
