This is the destruction of bone (osteonecrosis) resulting from suffering significant episodes of decompression. The pathophysiology seems to relate to ischaemia and infarction of the bone associated with nitrogen bone vessel embolism.
Is specific diagnostic evidence required to apply the SOP? - Yes.
Diagnosis is based on imaging with CT [computerised axial tomogram] scan or MRI [magnetic resonance imaging] scan of the bones. The relevant medical specialist is an orthopaedic surgeon.
Are there sub-factors that require specific diagnostic information? - No.
